New Reopening Policies

As we reopen at both CLIMB Works locations, taking care of our guests and our staff remains our top focus. We are carefully following guidelines released by the state of Tennessee and Hawaii, as well as implementing the following new policies & procedures to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Customer screening

All guests will be asked the following questions before arrival. If your answer is “yes” to any of the following we would kindly ask that you reschedule or cancel your reservation for the safety of our staff and other guests.

  1. Have you been in close contact with a confirmed case of COVID-19?
  2. Are you experiencing a cough, shortness of breath or sore throat?
  3. Have you had a fever in the last 48 hours?
  4. Have you had a new loss of taste or smell?
  5. Have you had vomiting or diarrhea in the last 24 hours?

Contactless Check-In

We also ask that you check your confirmation email for a link to fill out your individual waivers on your own devices within 24 hours of your activity time. If you aren’t able to do this on your own device, we will have QR codes onsite to scan with your personal device.

We also ask for our guests to please pay with debit or credit cards so we limit cash handling for our staff.

How we’re handling cleaning

We’ve increased cleaning procedures throughout our location and high-touch areas will be cleaned every two hours and between tour groups. We’ve added more sanitization stations throughout the park to help keep activity surfaces clean. We’ve increased our gear cleaning frequency and added organized gear rotation for used gear to limit exposure.

Face masks and fever testing

All staff members will be required to wear a mask or face covering over their nose and mouth in line with the best practices given by the CDC.

Staff will also be fever tested daily before every shift and be required to stay home if experiencing any COVID-19 related symptoms.

Guests are encouraged to wear their own masks but it is not required to participate.

Adventure Operational Changes

We’ve limited our tour sizes and spread out available tour times to limit overlapping groups at our check-in building and to allow additional time to sanitize between groups. Our platforms are also large enough to allow for social distancing.

Diving & Snorkeling on the North Shore

CLIMB WorksThere are many wonderful diving and snorkeling sites on the North Shore you can access during the summer. Bear in mind North side becomes unsafe towards the winter months due to the intense and, frankly, legendary wave action it receives. The North Shore is a fantastic place to interact with some amazing wildlife and beautiful reef systems. 

Before we get into some of the sites, there are some things one should bear in mind when getting in the water. 

Be aware of the currents and waves! If you are unfamiliar with a location, a great way to ensure your safety is to ask a lifeguard or a local, someone who is familiar with the way the ocean acts in the area. Currents such as rip currents can pull you very far distances. 

CLIMB Works

Never go alone and always make sure someone knows your plans! This is a cardinal rule with SCUBA divers and freedivers, but it also applies to snorkelers. Take a buddy with you! Not only is sharing the experience more fun, but it is far safer having someone to watch your back. 

Look don’t touch! The coral is beautiful but it’s also vulnerable. Touching the coral can pass bacteria and other pathogens that can harm the animal. Corals are also very fragile so try not to stand on them! You may be lucky enough to see some Hawaiian Green sea turtles, be sure to apply this rule to them as well. They’re vulnerable animals as well and getting to close can put unnecessary stress on them. 

Shark’s Cove: Shark’s Cove may seem intimidating based solely on the name, but don’t worry! This site isn’t named for shark sightings, but rather for the sharp lava rock that makes up this cove; so be sure to bring your water shoes! This area has a shallow tidal pool just off of Kamehameha Highway that’s great for families to splash around in during the day. To the left of the tide pool is the actual cove where the water gets deeper and the snorkeling gets better! You’ll see quite a few fish in this area as well as a good deal of turtles. For the divers, this spot is fantastic. There are plenty of caves and swim-throughs to explore. Just be aware that this area becomes unsafe during our winter swells. 

CLIMB WorksThree Tables: Next to Shark’s Cove, this area is similar in wildlife, but with the difference being in the strange table-like formations from which this beach gets its name. This space isn’t as enclosed and it is easier to get distracted and swim out too far where there is a fairly strong offshore current. 

Turtle Bay: Turtle Bay is both a beach and a resort. It’s a nice enclosed space that doesn’t tend to get too rough or deep. There’s some coral and fish life easily observed from the surface. 

Kawela Bay: Near Turtle Bay, this beach is also enclosed and relatively calm. The water is pristine and clear, making it a good spot for floating on the surface and snorkeling. Also a spot where turtles frequent. 

Haleiwa Trench: A man-made trench accessible from the Haleiwa Beach Park, this is a good spot for freedivers and SCUBA divers to get depth they can’t elsewhere on the North Shore.

We hope you enjoy your time while exploring the world below ours, but always keep in mind your own limitations when trying new things. While we encourage you to push yourself to grow we want you to stay safe! The ocean is an amazing place that should be treated with great respect. AlwaysCLIMB | Kayla’s Story

Like most challenges in life, our mental capacity is what holds us back from moving forward, not our physical ability. Self doubt, pride, fear, and failure all cause us to take a step back, slow down, and live life more safely. When we do this we miss out on so much of what we as human beings are capable of.

CLIMB WorksRock climbing to me is a very physical way to change my mindset. Every route I climb, whether completed or not, has something to teach me. I am proving to myself what I can do.

Early last year I experienced something that sped up that learning process for me. I was bouldering and had just completed a route when I dropped about 25 feet, intending to meet the crash pad beneath me. Instead, my foot caught on a ledge and the rest of my body kept going. My foot was severed from my body. With adrenaline already pumping, I was able to roll over, prop my leg upward to help with the bleeding, and yell for a buddy to go call 911.

I remember refusing to cry until I noticed the paramedics start to cut into my brand new climbing shoes in order to free my lifeless foot. A careful surgeon was reattaching nerves and veins, placing fake ligaments, and reconnecting muscle within the hour.

I was miserable at first, letting myself think that everything was ruined and I would never be the same again. Friends and family were there to help but I was too upset to ask. Being in a wheelchair in snow-covered Idaho meant that I couldn’t leave my apartment.

Then I changed my mindset. I was soon sledding down icy hills as friends pushed me home from campus.

Four months later, my surgeon freed my foot from its cast and aggressively shoved my lump of a foot back and forth. I have never felt so much pain, or anger for one person. Could he not have just been gentle? He told me later that he had acted this way to show me what my foot was capable of -that I shouldn’t baby it or be afraid to push myself even when it hurts.

So for the second time, I changed my mindset. I was walking again a week later, running after a month, and climbing again the next. I never did physical therapy because walking, running, yoga, hiking, swimming, and slack lining were enough.

I had to relearn everything and continuously convince myself not to feel upset or discouraged, or even jealous of others who weren’t struggling at all. Every time I would discover something that I could no longer do, like point my toes in ballet or heel hook when climbing, I would do it over and over again until I could.

Now I’m here, in Hawaii, because I want to keep pushing myself. Right now I’m learning to freedive and surf. I’ve fallen on coral, and had the shocking experience of being tossed by waves until I’ve eaten half the ocean and my ears are buzzing. However much that sucks, the accomplishment is learning to take it in and then try again.

Here at CLIMB Works, our motto is “Always C.L.I.M.B.”: Challenge, Learn, Inspire, Master, and Believe. This to me embodies the reason I am here in Hawaii and the reason that I climb. Whatever adventures I am pursuing in life, I will be challenging myself, learning something new, looking for inspiration, mastering skills, and believing in my abilities

I’m so grateful for my broken foot, for the ways that the experience changed my mindset, and the jagged scar that serves as a reminder to Always CLIMB.

Operation Underground Railroad + CLIMB Works

For the past several months we have been talking about how fortunate we are as a company and how important it is for us to find ways to give back. We wanted to team up with an organization in which we could build a long term partnership. We tossed around some different ideas but nothing really stuck.

Then that partnership we’d been looking for literally walked through our front door. A family had come to zip line at CLIMB Works Keana Farms and they were wearing shirts for an organization called Operation Underground Railroad (O.U.R.). Some of our staff knew a little bit about the organization and started talking to them about it. It turns out it was the founder, Tim Ballard, and his family. We learned more about their mission, what they do for children around the world and their passion for saving innocent lives. We knew we had to be a part of it.

O.U.R.’s mission is “to shine a light to the world on the global epidemic of child sex trafficking, and in doing so rescue children from slavery and provide recovery aftercare along with assisting law enforcement in the prosecution of trafficking offenders.”

O.U.R. has gathered the world’s experts in extraction operations and in anti-child trafficking efforts to bring an end to child slavery. Their team consists of former CIA, Navy SEALs, and Special Ops operatives that lead coordinated identification and extraction efforts. These operations are always in conjunction with law enforcement throughout the world.

We were so moved by their mission and by the passion of their team that we knew we had to get involved.

Our motto at CLIMB Works is “AlwaysCLIMB.” We encourage people to step outside of their comfort zones and take on new challenges. How can we encourage you all to CLIMB if we don’t continue to find ways to do so ourselves?

We often tell people the hardest step toward achieving a goal is figuring out how to get started. That’s why we have started creating starter kits for people. So our first step in joining the O.U.R. fight is by creating a specially designed O.U.R. + CLIMB Works t-shirt that is for sale on our online store. The proceeds of the t-shirt go directly to O.U.R. But more than that, the shirts will be our platform (and hopefully yours) to tell people about O.U.R.’s mission. Wearing the shirt will be a great opportunity for our team and everyone else who wears it to tell the many people we meet from around the world about O.U.R. and how they can help.

It is a small step, but as we often say “the first step is the hardest.”

ALEX’S STARTER KIT

In the process he dropped 50 pounds and discovered a love for the outdoors and hiking. He has made it his goal to hike through all the national parks.

A WEIGHTLOSS JOURNEY

In the summer of 2011 my family decided we were going to do something different for vacation and go somewhere new. I wasn’t completely for it yet but my mom told us we would be going to Gatlinburg, Tennessee. We went hiking, visited the University of Tennessee (my favorite college team), and more importantly visited CLIMB Works. I had never gone ziplining before, but always wanted to and my mom said she found a company that ranked above the rest! I had an awesome time that helped solidify my love for the outdoors and learn a little bit along the way.

Fast forward four years later. I was about to graduate college from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. It had been a great four years, and I don’t regret one bit of it but there I was 30 pounds heavier than when I started. The weekends out with friends, sharing a couple pizzas a week with my roommates, a busy schedule with work & school work had done a number on me. I needed to make a change. I decided that I was going to take a week off to hang out with my family and friends after I graduated and then I needed to make a serious change in my lifestyle. I needed to leave that comfort zone of pizza, beer, and laziness. I joined a gym, looked up some workouts online, and set a goal to lose 30 pounds. I went to the gym every day after work and then to the track for another workout. At least once a week I would be wearing my CLIMB Works t-shirt that I had gotten four years ago. I had slowly realized that the words printed on my shirt were becoming a major part of my life. Weight loss isn’t easy. You have to work hard and challenge yourself. You have to learn about what to do to get rid of that excess weight. You have to believe in yourself and the process because it’s a long process that doesn’t just happen overnight. It took a long time to pack on those pounds and it was going to take some time to get rid of them and keep them off. You need to have a strong and solid reason to start so when you’re feeling down and don’t want to continue you will think back to why you started to keep you going.

Since going to the Smoky Mountains, I had this love for the outdoors. I used that to help me with my weight loss and started hiking more after work, on my days off, and even when visiting my friends on the other side of the state. I went mountain biking for the first time that summer as well. It was something I always wanted to do but never knew much about it or where to go. My days off were filled with hiking, mountain biking, and the gym. Weight loss suddenly became easier! How? Because I found things that I love to do and can challenge myself to push a little harder to become a little faster and to last a little longer each time. I entered CLIMB Works video contest last summer in the hopes to reach out to others so that they could realize that losing weight doesn’t have to be a miserable thing. Hiking up One Thousand Steps trail was hard and took a long 30 minutes in 90 degree heat with 100% humidity but being outside was more fun than going to the gym.  When you are happy and having fun with what you are doing then success will follow. I was bummed that I didn’t win the contest and the GoPro but I felt even better knowing that my video had at least reached one person if not more and inspired them to achieve their goals.

I continued lifting, running, hiking, and mountain biking all through the fall and winter. I believe it was around Christmas time when I finally reached my goal of 30 pounds lost. I felt great! I felt like I was standing on top of the world and that nothing could stop me. I decided to keep the weight loss going! Ten more pounds! I knocked those pounds out in a couple months! March came and I had decided to go for ten more pounds. It was going good and I was feeling great! I reached the 180’s and injury struck. I couldn’t lift, I couldn’t mountain bike, and at first running and hiking was difficult. This was just a little bump in the road, and I had to figure out how to reach my goal without those things. After a couple weeks off, I was able to start running and hiking again. I continued to push myself and did the One Thousand Steps trail again with one of my best friends, Jared. To us we were just briskly walking up the trail but to others we were probably blurs because we made it up in 13 minutes exactly! That’s 17 minutes faster than the last time I did it. I worked and put in the time and 355 days after I started I was there. I didn’t just do it; I mastered weight loss and completely crushed my goal. I lost 50 pounds in less than a year. I stepped out of my comfort zone, changed my whole lifestyle & eating habits, and reached something that many see as impossible or too boring to keep going.

When I tell people I lost 50 pounds I get a congratulations that is usually followed up with “how did you do it? Why did you want to lose 50 pounds?” In a shortened version of what’s above I tell them you don’t have to always go to the gym or go for a run. Go for a hike, walk, or bike ride; just get outside and do something! As long as you are happy and having fun with what you do then success will follow. I have had many people ask me what my reason for keep going is: I wanted a healthier and better me. I have a long bucket list that I want cross everything off of, and if I continued with my college ways there would have been no way I would have been able to cross everything off my list. I did it for my family and friends so that I can spend many years with them as well. That is why I chose to always C.L.I.M.B. and continue to do so to this day.

GETTING TO KNOW SOMEONE

If an 11-mile hike to the top of Mount Cammerer is stepping out of your comfort zone, then I guess you could say I was really going for gold recently when I went on a hike with a guy I had never before spent any one-on-one time with. Getting to know someone new absolutely qualifies as stepping outside your comfort zone, too. Scrolling through someone’s Instagram profile is a pretty risk-free way to get to know someone (well, risk-free until you accidentally like a picture from a year ago), but if you really want to get to know someone, spend 3 hours in the car and 5 hours hiking with them. I’m not recommending this as the best way to get to know someone, I’m just telling you what happened. And instead of long breaks of awkward silence, I actually really got to know this guy. And I really enjoyed his company, which, if I’m being honest, I partly requested because I didn’t want to hike alone. In the dark. With bears. And we did see a bear.

At CLIMB Works, we feel like time spent doing things together in the outdoors is something special. It’s a way to make memories and share experiences that bring people out of their comfort zones and closer together. And our hike is evidence of that. We did probably spend too much time together but we enjoyed each other’s company and have a better friendship now because of it.

So invite someone that you’d like get to know to do something, whether it’s to go on an adventure, go on a walk or grab a cup of coffee. It might be uncomfortable at first, but I kind of think that’s the point, right?

What is AlwaysCLIMB?

You’ve seen it on our t-shirts, on our website and all over our social media, but what exactly is AlwaysCLIMB?

Perhaps you’ve wondered why our name is CLIMB Works when there isn’t much climbing involved. CLIMB is actually an acronym that stands for Challenge. Learn. Inspire. Master. Believe.

If you’ve ever been on one of our tours you’ve heard your guide give his or her personal take on what AlwaysCLIMB means to them. Each guide’s explanation is a little different because everyone’s interpretation of CLIMB is a little different. And that’s exactly how we intended it.

Our goal here at CLIMB Works is to get people out of their comfort zones, to push them to do something that may seem scary or out of reach to them, and to help them realize they are capable of doing so much more than they thought they could do.

We want to see you CLIMB.

On the zipline course, as in life, everyone’s CLIMB is different. For some people, going against all their fears and jumping off a platform is monumental for them. For others it’s the challenge of going upside down or making it up the ascension faster than their partner. Everyone’s comfort zone is different so everyone’s CLIMB is different.

For some it’s committing to run a 5K. For others, it’s training for the IronMan.

For some it’s going after that dream internship. For others, it’s going for the corner office.

For some it’s jumping off a cliff. For others it’s not letting themselves fall off the cliff.

For some it’s letting people in. For others, it’s letting people go.

We had a recent participant who is currently fighting cancer and has used the AlwaysCLIMB motto as his personal fight motto. What an inspiration that is to hear.  

An amazing thing we’ve discovered along the way is that it’s easier to CLIMB when you feel supported. We’ve had people that were scared to death to jump who were cheered on by complete strangers on their tour. And you know what? They jumped. Sometimes we all just need to be told ‘you can do this.’ And when we realize we can do that thing we didn’t think we could do, we want to do the next thing we didn’t think we could do, and the next and the next.

That is what we want to give people; the realization that when we push ourselves we can do incredible things.

And that is what it means to alwaysCLIMB.
