CLIMB & Aloha: How the CLIMB Works Philosophy matches Local Hawaiian Culture

This image is by CLIMB Works.

When you visit our course in Hawaii you’ll be on a land that lives by the word “Aloha” and you will often hear the saying, “Aloha; it’s a lifestyle”. In Hawaiian the word Aloha means “hello”, “goodbye”, and “I love you”. But, there is more to it than you know! We want to share with you why it means so much to the Hawaiian culture and how you can apply it, with our motto “Always CLIMB” into your daily lives.

CLIMB WorksFor those who have come ziplining with us, or for those who are looking to zip with us, we have a motto that we choose to live by, both at work and in our everyday lives; the motto is “Always CLIMB”. We’re constantly asked, “Why are you called CLIMB Works?”, and it’s because of that motto and what it means. The word CLIMB is actually an acronym and it stands for Challenge, Learn, Inspire, Master and Believe. All of our zipline courses, and the other outdoor adventure courses we design and build, are modeled after our motto “Always CLIMB”. Our goal is to help people step out of their comfort zones, in a safe and controlled environment, so they can experience something new to help them grow, and realize they can do hard things because when you CLIMB, CLIMB works.

CLIMB WorksThis motto when applied on and off our courses creates a sense of unity with those around you as you not only push yourselves to grow, but help and encourage others as well. We see it everyday as we take families, coworkers, newlyweds, retirees, friends, and strangers alike ziplining and watch as a group of random people become family as they share in our adventures.

This amazing unity and friendship that occurs, amongst these groups of people, is because they’re coming together in a shared experience, placing judgements aside, and experiencing CLIMB as it’s meant to be. They challenge themselves to overcome fears, they learn more about each other, they find inspiration in their groups, they master obstacles and together they believe in what they can do. When CLIMB happens you can’t help but become closer to each other.

CLIMB WorksThe word Aloha is significant in the Hawaiian language because it speaks of love, of greeting, of patience, of compassion and peace. Anytime you see “Ha” in a word, the significance of that is the breath of life that a person has within them. That breath of life, or the spirit that they have within them, is shared with another. In ancient Hawaii, when greeting people, you would greet them by touching foreheads and noses and breathing in each others “Ha” or “spirit of life”. That was the way you would greet others, and it is still something done today in the Hawaiian culture. “Ha”, that spirit, in the word “Aloha” is a greeting word and it’s also to wish you well as you depart. But, from the very beginning it had a significant deep cultural meaning as people would meet and they would share with each other their “Ha”, or that spirit and breath of life that everyone has within them.

CLIMB WorksWhen you join “Aloha” and “Always CLIMB” together you witness a beautiful blend of seeing and treating each other with a spirit of kindness and wellness, knowing that we’re each on a journey of growth. We share with each other a level of respect, for all our differences, and choose to live in such a way that we help each person as they CLIMB because we see their “Ha”, or breath and spirit of life. And so we share that with you, our “Ha” to yours, our motto “Always CLIMB”, and the message of how this can be lived everyday. Aloha!

5 Tips for Planning your Fall Trip to Gatlinburg

This image is by CLIMB Works.

A question we often get asked, especially as the seasons begin to change, is when is the best time to visit the Smoky Mountains for the fall colors? Well, here are 5 Tips to planning your trip for one of the most magical times of year!

CLIMB Works

When is best time to come for the color transformation?

The Smoky Mountains are covered in a variety of trees including sugar maples, hickories, sweetgum, scarlet oaks, red maples and nearly 100 other species of native trees. This makes for amazing fall colors from vibrant golds to oranges and reds! The best time to catch this transformation is mid-October to the beginning of November. This splendor of colors will last for about 7 weeks, depending on the temperature and length of sunlight in the day. For that reason it’s always a little tricky to predict when the exact “best” time will be.

How does fall in the mountains work?

What’s incredible about fall in the mountains is that it’s like a cascade of color. The leaves will begin to change at the highest elevation first and throughout the weeks will make its way down the mountain as temperatures cool. The green in the leaves will start the break down process and in turn create those vibrant colors we all love.

How soon should you start planning your trip?

The Smoky Mountains National Park is the most visited National Park in America! That being said, it is always wise to plan your trip at least a few months in advance, especially for this time of year. The last three weeks of October hosts the most people.

CLIMB WorksWhat are the best ways to see the fall colors?

There are so many ways to enjoy this display of colors, and maybe we’re a little biased, but ziplining is our favorite way! But in all seriousness, most people will take in the views by driving through Cades Cove and Newfound Gap Road (US 441), but those roads can get pretty congested during this time of year! Being able to zipline amongst the trees is something else entirely! You don’t have to worry about getting distracted while you drive, you can pause on our platforms and take pictures, and you can feel like the wind as you zip through the many fall colors. It really is the most breathtaking experience.

After you zipline with us we can suggest a few hikes where you can continue to take your time and soak in the beauty that is all around you!

CLIMB WorksWhat are the best views of the foliage?

Both our zipline courses offer unique ways to experience the fall colors. The tree top course puts you right in the middle of it all! Zipping from tree to tree, you’ll be right amongst the leaves. Our Mountain Top Course will give you the full picture and view of all the colors as they cover the mountains. If you can’t decide, that’s ok! You can do both 🙂 Afterwards you can take a short drive up the Foothills Parkway to take some epic pictures. Pack yourself a lunch and have a little picnic on your car as you enjoy these scenic spots of the epic Smoky Mountains.

This image is by CLIMB Works.

Some things are just worth the extra time! Want the perfect day from ziplining to horseback and ATV riding, relaxing on the beach, surfing, shopping and eating amazing food??  While not being able to rent a car can be frustrating and you may feel limited to what you can see and do, we want to show you some of our favorite places that are right next door!

After ziplining with us, here are the places you should check out:

CLIMB Works#1 Kahuku Food Trucks

If you’re craving seafood, burgers, dessert, or even a little shopping, the Kahuku Food Trucks and surrounding area offer it all.

Some of our favorite trucks are Ono Yo, D&L Seafood, Kahuku Famous Shrimp, and Nelly’s Tacos (just to name a few). Around the corner is Seven Brothers at the Mill (this is where you can find the best burgers!) and Raised by Waves (health conscious, plant based food!) .

These local finds are always our “Go To” places!

Around the trucks you can check out little shops and pick up some souvenirs, or explore the local art at either the Art Box Gallery near Nelly’s Tacos or in Raised by Waves!

What we love about this area is that it is all locally owned and operated! So you know that when you’re shopping you’re directly helping the local community.

#2 Gunstock RanchCLIMB Works

Another locally owned and family run business since the early 2000’s have the best horseback riding tours on the island! Not only that but they offer Eco-Tours where you can plant your own Legacy Tree and help the rare Native Hawaiian plants from going extinct.

They also offer off-road adventures in a guided UTV tour where you’ll explore the Ko’olau Mountains and back country in a fun off-road experience. So if you enjoyed the ATV ride you had with us, you’re definitely gonna want to give this tour a try too!

CLIMB Works#3 Mālaekahana State Recreation Area

Across the street from Gunstock Ranch is this little gem tucked away from the main road. You follow a road into the park, so not many people know that there is a beach right in there!

This area is a perfect way to end the day relaxing on the beach with plenty of shade or sun if you’d prefer. There are even some fire pits, picnic tables, and bathrooms so you have all your needs covered!

Mālaekahana also has a camp ground so if you’d like to stay the night you can! They even rent out surf boards so you can try your skill on some good beginner waves.
