How We Keep You Safe During Your Oahu Zipline Adventure

A happy couple taking an Oahu zipline adventure.

If you’ve never been ziplining before (or even if you have), it’s completely normal to be a little nervous when you visit CLIMB Works Keana Farms. We’re the first to admit that soaring over the treetops at 30 miles per hour is a little outside most people’s comfort zone! However, when it comes to safety, there is absolutely nothing you need to worry about at our zipline course.

CLIMB Works Keana Farms is an industry leader in zipline safety. Our course exceeds the standards set by the Association for Challenge Course Technology and the American National Standards Institute. Read on for a detailed look at how CLIMB Works keeps you safe during your Oahu zipline adventure.

No Hand-BrakingA happy couple taking an Oahu zipline adventure.

At many zipline courses across America, guests are responsible for slowing themselves down before they reach the end of a line. The most popular technique for this is “hand-braking,” in which a zipliner wears leather gloves and grabs onto the cable to reduce their speed. Although it is commonplace, hand-braking can lead to a number of safety issues. For example, overly excited riders sometimes forget braking instructions and fail to slow down at the right time. On the other hand, a nervous rider might brake too early and find themselves stuck in the middle of a line. Hand-braking can also lead to friction burns and other injuries if exposed skin comes into contact with the zipline equipment.

Here at CLIMB Works, we have avoided all of the problems associated with hand-braking by creating our very own state-of-the-art automatic braking system: ZIPKEA. Our patented technology is called a Kinetic Energy Absorber (KEA) because it harnesses the energy produced by a zipline rider and reuses it to bring the participant to an appropriate landing speed. ZIPKEA also features a built-in retrieval system that brings in riders who stop short of the landing platform. Our trained guides operate ZIPKEA, as well as a backup braking device, so rather than worrying about braking at the right moment, our guests can just relax and enjoy their Oahu zipline adventure!

Each morning, our staff inspects our zipline course to make sure that everything is running in tip-top shape. CLIMB Works Keana Farms also receives comprehensive annual and bi-annual inspections from a team of visiting zipline experts. As an extra safety measure, the course at Keana Farms was built with a handful of small tension triggers that are virtually unnoticeable but indicate a potential problem when activated. These triggers allow us to catch and fix any issues before they occur.

Highly Trained GuidesA guide at CLIMB Works Keana Farms pointing out something to two young guests.

In addition to being well versed in our course, our guides are certified in First Aid and CPR and prepared for advanced rescue scenarios.

Absolutely no prior experience is needed to zipline at CLIMB Works because our staff members will teach you everything you need to know. Your guides will be with you every step of the way during your canopy tour, and they will handle all equipment transfers to hook you up to the zipline and other sections of the course. 5 Tips for Conquering Your Fear of Heights When You Zipline on Oahu

A smiling woman riding one of our Oahu ziplines.

If you’re uneasy around heights, you’re not alone. In a poll conducted by Chapman University, researchers found that being afraid of heights is the second most common fear among Americans (the first is public speaking). The good news is that a fear of heights doesn’t preclude you from going ziplining at CLIMB Works Keana Farms!

Each year, we host hundreds of guests who are anxious about heights. Although they may start off nervous, once our guests experience their first zipline, a rush of adrenaline completely wipes away their fear. You can read numerous reviews on our TripAdvisor page from visitors who overcame their nerves at CLIMB Works.

Of course, those with a clinically significant case of acrophobia (i.e. someone who may have a panic attack on an escalator or a ladder) should probably skip our course. But if you have a normal fear of heights, we would love to have you! To help you prepare for your adventure at CLIMB Works, we have put together five tips for conquering your fear of heights when you zipline on Oahu.

1. Read Up on Our Safety MeasuresGuests pulling themselves up with ropes at our ziplines in Oahu.

A great way to put your mind at ease before ziplining is reading up on our safety practices. Our course receives rigorous and regular inspections and exceeds the standards set by the Association for Challenge Course Technology and the American National Standards Institute. Furthermore, CLIMB Works uses a patented automatic braking system, so guests don’t have to worry about slowing themselves down. For more information, check out our in-depth article about how we keep guests safe.

2. Get Encouragement from Our Guides

If you are feeling nervous during your zipline adventure, don’t hesitate to talk to one of your guides! Our experienced team members have helped countless guests overcome their fear of heights with words of encouragement, humor, and plenty of positivity. In fact, overcoming challenges is a key part of the CLIMB Works philosophy. “CLIMB” is an acronym for Challenge/ Learn / Inspire / Master / Believe, and all of our team members are strong believers in this life-changing ideology.

When you zipline on Oahu, you won’t be flying solo! All eight of the ziplines at CLIMB Works can be enjoyed by two riders at the same time. This unique dual line design means that anxious guests can face their fears with their significant other or best friend at their side. It’s incredible how much having your partner or a pal with you can boost your confidence.

4. Remember to Breathe

If you find yourself getting anxious during your zipline tour, simply breathing can do wonders to help you calm down. According to psychiatrists at New York Medical College and Columbia University, the following breathing technique has been scientifically proven to help people reach a better state of mind:

Breathe in gently through your nose for six seconds. Then gently exhale through your nose for six seconds. Continue this pattern for a few minutes or until you feel more relaxed.

5. Visualize Yourself ZipliningA man and a woman enjoying our Oahu zipline course.

Visualizing can be a powerful tool for helping people conquer their fears. Before you visit CLIMB Works, take a moment to imagine what it’s like to soar through the sky on one of our ziplines. Try to conjure up as realistic an image as possible in your mind’s eye. This mental preparation will help you feel ready when your real-life zipline tour begins.

5 Things to Bring When You Go Ziplining in Oahu at CLIMB Works Keana Farms

Two people ziplining in Oahu at CLIMB Works Keana Farms.

Wondering what to bring when you go ziplining in Oahu? Here are five things you’ll want to take with you to CLIMB Works Keana Farms:

1. Comfortable Shoes and ClothesTwo people ziplining in Oahu at CLIMB Works Keana Farms.

When you visit CLIMB Works, you will definitely want to wear comfortable closed toe shoes. We recommend wearing tennis shoes that provide decent traction, as walking is part of the tour. Sandals and flip-flops are not permitted since they can lead to stubbed toes and are prone to falling off.

Casual, athletic clothing is ideal for ziplining. Baggy clothes, loose jewelry, and very short shorts should be avoided. Pants or shorts with zippered pockets are great if you plan on taking personal belongings with you during your tour.

2. Sunscreen and Sunglasses

If you don’t want to finish your zipline adventure looking like a lobster, be sure to apply plenty of sunscreen prior to your tour! The sun shines very brightly in Oahu, so we suggest that our fair-skinned guests bring some sunscreen to CLIMB Works and apply it right before they embark on their tour for maximum protection. We provide lockers for our guests to use, so you don’t need to worry about holding onto your sunscreen when you go ziplining. Sunglasses and a ballcap will keep the sun out of your eyes as you whizz across the sky.

While Oahu typically boasts great weather, it isn’t uncommon for short bursts of rain to occur throughout the day. As long as there is no lightning or thunder, CLIMB Works continues to offer tours when it is raining. If the forecast is calling for some precipitation when you’re scheduled to go ziplining in Oahu, consider bringing a thin rain poncho to wear when it showers.

4. GoPro Camera

Unlike some other zipline courses, CLIMB Works Keana Farms allows guests to bring cameras and phones. However, we highly suggest that these items be secured with a lanyard or a strap, since loose items may fall out during your tour. The most convenient way to take videos or pictures of your zipline adventure is with a GoPro. CLIMB Works offers special helmets equipped with GoPro mounts, so you can take awesome hands-free, POV footage.

Of course, guests don’t need to bring a camera to take home some great pictures of their tour! CLIMB Works takes professional photos of all our guests at five strategic locations throughout the course. These photos are available for viewing and purchasing right after the tour.

5. A Sense of AdventureA girl and her father ziplining in Oahu.

Although this item may be a little more intangible, we highly recommend bringing a sense of adventure with you to our zipline course! For most people, ziplining is a few steps outside of their comfort zone. When you bring a sense of adventure with you, however, you’ll view our course as an exciting new challenge to conquer. This can-do attitude is guaranteed to make your zipline experience an absolute blast.

5 Things That Make Our Oahu Ziplines Unique

This image is by CLIMB Works.

Even if you’ve been ziplining before, you’ve never experienced anything quite like a tour at CLIMB Works Keana Farms! Located on the grounds of a working farm on Oahu’s North Shore, our zipline course combines state of the art technology with breathtaking natural beauty. To help you prepare for your next vacation, we have put together a guide to five things that make our Oahu ziplines totally unique.

1. Patented Braking SystemA smiling woman riding one of our Oahu ziplines.

Many ziplines employ a “hand-braking” system, in which participants must wear gloves and grab onto the zipline cable in order to slow down. While hand-braking is very common, it increases the risk of inconvenience and injury for participants. An overwhelmed zipliner might brake too early and get stuck in the middle of a line or he might forget to brake at all and slam full speed into a stationary object. Hand-brakes have also been known to cause friction burns if a piece of skin is accidentally exposed to a cable.

Here at CLIMB Works, we have eschewed hand-braking in favor of our own patented braking system called ZIPKEA. This device absorbs the energy produced by a zipline rider and reuses it to bring the participant to a comfortable landing speed. ZIPKEA also features a built-in retrieval system that brings riders to the landing platform if they are coming in too slow.

2. Dual Line Design

Another thing that makes our Oahu ziplines unique is their dual line design. All eight of our lines can be enjoyed by two riders at the same time. Guests can soar through the sky side by side with a friend or family member. Of course, our dual lines are especially fun for couples who are on vacation together. What could be more romantic than flying over the North Shore’s gorgeous scenery with the one you love?

3. The Longest Zipline on the Island

CLIMB Works Keana Farms is home to the longest zipline in Oahu! Stretching for roughly 2,500 feet (about half a mile), our signature line is absolutely thrilling. Our entire zipline course is bigger than any of the other courses in the area, and we also boast the highest ziplines on the island.

4. Beautiful Photos

If you were hoping to get a souvenir photo from your zipline adventure, we’ve got you covered! As you make your way through the tour, your guides will snap some great action shots of your whole group enjoying the course. All of your photos will be available for purchase at the end of the tour.

Ziplines aren’t the only fun you’ll enjoy when you take a tour at CLIMB Works! Each tour begins with a 10-minute ATV ride into the forest, which is an adventure in itself. Other highlights include three open-air bridges, two rappels, and a number of learning stations where you’ll hear fun facts about Hawaiian history and culture. Guests will even have the chance to sample some of the food grown right here at Keana Farms, including apple bananas, cherry tomatoes, and macadamia nuts.

What It Means to C.L.I.M.B. at Our Ziplines in Oahu

A T-shirt with the CLIMB Works motto.

Here at CLIMB Works Keana Farms, guests are often surprised to find out the meaning behind our company’s name. Many people assume that the “climb” in CLIMB Works simply refers to the fun rope climbing that is part of our zipline course. While there is plenty of climbing during our adventures, the “climb” in CLIMB Works is actually an acronym for Challenge. Learn. Inspire. Master. Believe. Pretty cool, right?

These words are more than just flowery language; they represent the essence of our company’s philosophy. CLIMB Works was founded with the mission of helping people accomplish more than they ever thought they could. Every day, our team is blessed with the opportunity to guide our guests through an unforgettable experience that leaves them with a real sense of accomplishment. To help you prepare for your visit to our ziplines in Oahu, we have put together a brief guide to the CLIMB ideology.

1. ChallengeGuests pulling themselves up with ropes at our ziplines in Oahu.

The legendary motivational speaker Zig Ziglar once said, “If it doesn’t challenge you, it won’t change you.” We completely agree. In order for people to grow, they must first step out of their comfort zones. For many of our guests, going ziplining is a completely new, and somewhat frightening prospect. Whizzing through the sky at 30 miles per hour is definitely not an everyday experience!

The zipline course at CLIMB Works is the perfect way for guests to challenge themselves in a safe and controlled environment. Our course is designed for first-timers, and our guides will be with you every step of the way. As our owner Nick Thompson puts it, “It’s not about pushing to the extreme. It’s about pushing just beyond the comfortable.”

2. Learn

The second tenet of the CLIMB way of life is to always learn new things. When you make your way through or canopy tour, our knowledgeable guides will teach you lots of interesting information, not just about ziplining but about Hawaii as well. Guests will be immersed in local history and culture, and they will learn how to pronounce Hawaiian words.

Of course, all of this learning will never feel like school! Instead of sitting in a classroom, you’ll be enjoying hands-on experiences like cracking macadamia nuts with mortars and pestles and sampling sustainably grown fruit from Keana Farms.

A couple riding one of our ziplines in Oahu.3. Inspire

When we are presented with a challenge, inspiration is key in overcoming our obstacles. The guides at CLIMB Works are sure to inspire you with their unrelenting positivity and supportive attitude. Of course, our guests will also take inspiration from Hawaii’s breathtaking natural beauty. As you ride our ziplines in Oahu, you will admire spectacular views of the mountains, oceans, and greenery.

4. Master

There is no better feeling than mastering a challenge. When guests complete our zipline course, they are noticeably changed. They are more exuberant, more confident, and to put it simply, more alive. Guests who arrive with a fear of heights often end their tour by choosing to zip upside down. Witnessing this transformation is the best part of working at CLIMB Works!

5. BelieveA young woman enjoying one of our ziplines in Oahu.

Once you have conquered a challenge, you will find that you have a new sense of self-confidence. Throughout our canopy tours, guests know that their guides believe in them, and by the end of the adventure, they believe in themselves. This self-belief will follow you long after your visit to CLIMB Works, and it will serve you well as you embark on exciting new challenges.
